Table of Contents
Weebly is a complete platform developed for users to start and grow their online business, with beautiful, modern templates to create a professional looking website, whether it be for business or personal use, powerful ecommerce to build an online store (that works across any device) and integrated marketing, allowing you to build email campaigns integrated directly with your Weebly website, online store or blog.
In this review we’ll be focussing on Weebly’s website building platform. Weebly allows users to quite easily create a website without any technical know how or coding experience with it’s simple, widget-based in-browser editor. Weebly provides a wide range of professionally designed website templates so you don’t need to have the first clue about designing to be able to build your site with Weebly. Whether you envision a site that is modern yet minimalist or something that is classic yet feminine, Weebly will have a design template that will help bring your vision to life.
Who is Weebly best suited for?
According to Weebly, their platform is ‘designed for any entrepreneur who wants to reach a global audience’. As it’s very easy to use, with no prior knowledge of coding or technical experience required, it really is suitable for a variety of users and businesses, particularly small businesses. So whether you are a designer or photographer looking to showcase your portfolio, a restaurant looking to take online bookings/reservations or a retail shop wanting to access a bigger audience in which to sell your products, Weebly is a great option to start with and hopefully grow your online business.
Pricing – How much does Weebly cost?
Weebly offers a range of pricing plans to suit your budget and your requirements. If you’re looking to create a very small website and are likely to only need the very basics when it comes to the tools and features they offer, then Weebly offers a free plan (designed for basic use) that comes with 500MB of storage, a weebly.com subdomain and up to 10 pages. Like with the Wix website builder platform though, your website will include Weebly ads (they’ve got to fund their free website plans somehow). For the removal of ads, you will have to upgrade to the Starter plan (designed for personal use), which at $10 a month, allows you unlimited storage and to connect your domain.
Which Weebly price plan is best?
It depends on your needs. The most expensive price plan, at $60 per month, is probably only worthwhile if you are building an online retail site (where you plan to sell more than 25 products) as there are more advanced ecommerce features available here (such as real time shipping rates and abandoned cart emails).
Does Weebly include website hosting?
All Weebly price plans include free website hosting which means that your website will reside on Weebly’s servers (and you are subject to their terms) saving you a) the hassle of shopping around for a platform to host your website and b) having to pay for this service separately. It also carries out security and technical upgrades behind the scene to ensure your site is healthy, secure and remains up and running at all times.
Is Weebly easy to use? – How it works
Absolutely yes. Weebly is possibly the easiest website builder out there, it practically holds your hand and guides you through, step by step, in building your professional and highly functional website, quickly and painlessly. With Weebly, what you see is what you get otherwise known as WYSIWYG. Website builders that use WYSIWYG or “wiz-ee-wig”, allows you to see the end result (what your website will actually look like once completed), whilst you are still in edit mode. It’s drag and drop editor allows you to ‘grab’ your content/elements/features, drag it into position and ‘drop’ it into place. If you’re not happy with it, you can drag it and drop it into a new position. It’s that simple. There are no separate preview screens here with Weebly, where you have to flick back and forth, or any manual coding.
Their focus has always been to create and maintain an interface that is intuitive, and in turn, easy to use for everyone regardless of your skillset. Complete novices will love using Weebly but if you happen to have some coding know-how up your sleeves, Weebly grants you to edit the website’s HTML and CSS code, allowing you to take the customisation of your site to a whole new level thus making it totally unique.
How to use Weebly
After selecting the type of website you want to create, whether it’s a blog, a portfolio or a business, you’ll be presented with a selection of templates designed for that particular type of site. Whilst it does not have anywhere near the number of themes platforms like Wix provide, the selection of 40+ that are available, are beautifully designed, high quality and the latest designed templates are responsive too, making them adaptive across mobile and other devices. You also have the option to change your theme later down the line if you change your mind about it without having to rebuild your whole site, unlike Wix. Once your theme has been decided upon and you have selected your domain name, you can start to edit and build your new website.
Your elements are located in the dark panel on the left hand side of the screen such as text, buttons and images. You might want to start by adding the name of your site or changing the background image. When you drag an element onto your page, you will see that upon hover there is a small arrow to the left, a handle bar in the centre and a cross to the right. The arrow allows you to move or copy the element to another page, for example if you wanted to have the same text on a number of pages on your site. The handlebar allows you to drag the element about on the page and to position it where you desire. The cross is basically your delete button so to get rid of any element you no longer want on your page, simply hit the cross and then delete.
Add edit screen with panel
When you drag an element onto the page and click on it, you will be able to edit that particular element e.g. select the style of a button and what the text should read on it.
Add button image
You’ll notice that once you select a different function mode along the top of the screen, for example you go from ‘Build’ to ‘Pages’, the options in the left hand panel will also change and present you with the relevant options.

Weebly’s new Section element helps you when it comes to designing the layout of your site. It simply offers a way to add an area into which you can drop more objects. You can select from a number of pre-designed layouts depending on what it is you want to do and how it is you want it to look without having to even really think about it. This is great feature especially for those who need a helping hand when it comes to design inspiration. These pre designed layouts will make the website building process a lot quicker and give you confidence in knowing that your site will have a professional finish to it. A Section can be a free-form rectangle or it can use one of five layout types: Gallery, Team, Featured, Menu, and Contact.
Insert section/layout image
Once you have selected the pre-designed layout of your new added section, you can go ahead and edit it as you would with the rest of the page, treating it as an element itself. e.g. you can change the text, replace the images, insert relevant links etc.

How to add a new page
To add a new page to your website, select ‘Pages’ along the top of the screen and then select the ‘+’ icon in the dark left hand side panel.
Insert add page image
You will then need to select what type of page it is that you want to add e.g. standard page, blog page etc.
Insert page type image
Once you have selected the page type you want, you will be prompted to name the page by typing in the field provided as well as select what header type you prefer from the drop down menu. You can also select the level of page visibility here as well as configure your SEO settings. Voila, you have created your first new page.
Insert new page name image
You also have the option to duplicate the page by hitting the ‘Copy’ button, or deleting the page by hitting the ‘Delete’ button if you no longer need it.
For those that want more advanced tools and features to compliment the basic ones that are available through Weebly, look no further than the Weebly App Centre. The Weebly App Centre is a growing marketplace where you have access to a collection of fully integrated app, plugins, widgets and services that you can easily bolt onto your site with a one-click installation. Adding apps to your website will make it a more powerful experience and increase it’s functionality.
You can access the Weebly App Center by selecting ‘App’ along the top of your screen.
Insert app image
This will take you to the App center and where you can filter the apps by category. Some are free, others you will need to pay for.
Clicking on the app you are interested in will bring up more information about it, along with customer reviews. Should you wish to feature this app on your site, simply hit the ‘Add’ button. You will be asked to ‘Connect’ the app to your Weebly site. If the app requires payment, you will be taken to a payment page outside of Weebly (Weebly doesn’t handle any of the payment, Third-party developers do)
How to Manage your Apps
You will be able to access your apps at the bottom of the left hand side panel. Simply click on Manage and it will divert you to the ‘My Apps’ page.
Insert my apps page image
Alternatively, you can select Settings along the top of your screen, followed by ‘My Apps’ along the left hand side and this should take you to the same page.
Without a doubt, Weebly is possibly the most user-friendly website builders currently on the market. It’s drag and drop editor and minimalistic interface makes web creation suitable for all users no matter what level of technical skill you possess. From the absolute techie-phobe to someone who has worked with websites before, you don’t need to know a line of code to be able to navigate around Weebly and, in turn, build yourself a beautifully functional and highly professional looking website.
Pro’s of Weebly
Weebly excels in terms of the quality of design templates that are available and look great across all devices. Beautiful and functional, you’ll be able to find a template that suits your design palate and your site requirements. They can be easily adapted to further match your own personal needs, using the templates really as a base rather than the final piece.
Weebly is affordable or free, if the very basics is what you need. It has a number of price plans depending on your site’s needs from as little as $10 a month. The sensible approach would be to start using the free service and see how you get on from there. If you enjoy using it but find that you need more advanced features or tools, upgrade to the appropriate price plan.
Weebly gives you access to an App Center where you’ll find additional features that you can enhance your website with. Adding apps to your site is easy and can literally be done within a few clicks. Apps will allow you to further customise your site and make it truly unique to your personal or business needs.
Con’s of Weebly
One of the disadvantages when it comes to using Weebly’s is that it doesn’t provide online storage for your site media such as images and videos. This means that every time you want to use the same image or video somewhere else on your website, you’ll need to re-upload it. This can get tedious. The only exception is with backgrounds which appear on multiple pages.
With Weebly, there is also limited design flexibility as you are not quite as able to move site elements around as freely as you do with website builders like Wix.
Another big drawback is the lack of undo functionality when it comes to making site changes such as adding elements to the page or changing the theme. You can’t simply hit an undo button to go back to the previous state which seems counter-intuitive. Weebly only offers an undo and redo function for simple text entry.
