shopping autocomplete is a different list

Google keeps a separate suggestion set for the Shopping search box. Type a product there and the completions are mostly price bands, brands, sizes, retailers and deals. Web autocomplete for the same seed adds recipes, reviews and how-to questions. For a retailer, the Shopping list is the closer match to how people search for the product.

the dropdown only shows ten

Google caps what it displays. Appending each letter a to z and twenty intent modifiers to the seed forces the endpoint to reveal the rest of its list, typically 400 to 600 distinct suggestions for a broad product term, each with the relevance weight Google uses to order them.

compare two countries

Run the same seed for two countries and the table shows each suggestion with its weight in each market, plus filters for suggestions that appear in both lists or in only one. Retailer names, price bands and brands differ by country, and the comparison shows which.

nothing to sign up for

The endpoint is public and needs no key. Results are cached for six hours per seed, country, language and depth, so repeat runs return instantly.

> when operators reach for this

  • Ecommerce SEO leads building a collection-page keyword map from what shoppers actually type into Google Shopping, rather than from a web-search keyword tool.
  • Merchandisers checking which brands, price bands and attributes Google associates with a category before deciding filters and facets.
  • Google Ads managers mining shopping campaign search terms, especially the 'under', 'between' and 'near me' completions that signal a purchase.
  • Brands entering a new market comparing the US and UK (or DE and FR) completions for the same product to see which retailers and modifiers differ.
  • Content teams finding the 'vs', 'best' and 'which' questions that belong on a buying guide, with the transactional ones already separated from the informational.

Frequently asked questions

What is the score next to each suggestion?
It is the google:suggestrelevance value the autocomplete endpoint returns for that suggestion. Google uses it to order the dropdown, so a higher number means the suggestion would appear higher when someone types the seed. It is not a search volume, and Google does not document its scale, so do not compare values across different seeds.
How is this different from normal Google autocomplete?
The request carries ds=sh, which asks for the Shopping surface's suggestion set instead of web search. For the same seed, the Shopping list leans towards brands, price bands, sizes and retailers, while the web list adds recipes, reviews and how-to questions. Both come from the same public endpoint, this tool just asks for the Shopping one.
Why append every letter and a list of modifiers?
Google only shows around ten completions for any string. Adding a letter or a word changes the string and reveals ten more. Looping a to z and twenty intent words (best, cheap, vs, near me, under and so on) reaches most of the list Google holds for that seed. Depth lets you choose the cheaper a to z run, the modifier run, or both.
What do the intent tags mean?
A simple word match on each suggestion. Question means it starts with how, why, what, which, where or similar. Local means it contains near me, in store or pickup. Price means it contains under, between, cheap, deal, sale, price or a currency symbol. Compare means it contains vs, or, best, top or review. Everything else is tagged product. The tags exist to filter the table. They are word matches, so check them before quoting them.
How does the country comparison work?
Pick a second country and the same seed, language and depth run against both. The table then shows each suggestion with its score in each market, and the filters let you see what is in both, what only appears in the first country and what only appears in the second. The language stays the same for both runs, so compare markets that share one, or run them separately if they do not.
Does this use an API key or cost anything to run?
No. The autocomplete endpoint is public and unauthenticated. This tool sends up to 47 requests per country per run from our server, merges the results and caches them for six hours. There is no account. The only thing kept about you is a rate-limit counter per IP address, held in memory for an hour.
Why did I get an error saying Google returned nothing?
Google throttles the endpoint when a single server sends too many requests in a short period. When every request in a run comes back empty, the tool reports that rather than showing zero suggestions, because a real product seed almost always has completions. Wait a minute and run again. Runs that came back partly empty show a note above the table.
Can I get search volumes for these suggestions?
Not from this tool, and not from Google's autocomplete endpoint, which exposes no volume data. Download the CSV and paste the list into a keyword tool that reports volume. Volume tools do not report the Shopping autocomplete list, which is what this tool provides.
