Ecommerce Director Jonathan Wall To Leave Shop Direct

Ecommerce director at leading UK retailer Shop Direct Jonathan Wall has announced that he will be leaving following seven years at the company.

Wall joined the company as group ecommerce director in 2010 following a stint as chief executive of FlowersDirect.co.uk and was tasked with overseeing the improvement of all of the retail group’s online operations including Very and Littlewoods and he played a vital role in the shift of Shop Direct as being a catalogue retailer to the UK’s second biggest pure play retailer. During his time at the company, he oversaw the creation and the development of a number of five-star rated apps, led Very forthcoming AI-enabled chatbot and was at the forefront of the need for all of the company’s sites to be mobile friendly. Thanks to his drive, sales via mobile devices accounted for 68% of Shop Direct’s online sales last Christmas.

Speaking about his time at Shop Direct and his forthcoming exit, Jonathan Wall said: “When I arrived at Shop Direct, we were still very much a catalogue-focused business. Our ambition was to grow online to 70 per cent of total sales by the end of 2010 – a target that we smashed thanks to the relentless drive of the outstanding ecommerce team we have here.

“To look at everything the business has achieved since then – in particular making the bold decision to cut the catalogue last year to become 100 percent online, while continuing to hit record sales and profits — makes me extremely proud. Shop Direct has huge ambitions for the future and, while the time is right for me to go after something new, I have no doubt that the team here will continue to succeed.”

Jon Rudoe, group retail and technology director at Shop Direct, thanked Jonathan for everything that he achieved at Shop Direct and wished him well for the future. “On behalf of the whole board, I want to thank Jonathan for everything he’s achieved during his time at Shop Direct. His leadership, innovation, commitment and customer focus have moved us much closer to our ambition of becoming a world class digital retailer. He’ll leave a real legacy here, and we’re very grateful for that. Above all, Jonathan’s a top guy and will be missed. We wish him well for whatever he chooses to do next.”

According to Retail Week, it is understood that Jonathan Wall’s final day at Shop Direct will be in mid-August and he will then go on to pursue non-executive opportunities.

Wall’s resignation comes less than a month after Very Exclusive managing director Sarah Curran announced her intention to step down from her role at the end of this month. In addition, last week Shop Direct axed plans to sell the business due to a lack of interest from potential bidders.
