and much more.

With Squarespace you can just focus on adding new products and taking care of the daily operations of your store.

The History of Squarespace

Squarespace was created back in 2003. Its owner, Anthony Casalena, developed the platform while he was still in college. For a long time, he was the only employee at the company, but the sacrifices proved fruitful since the platform made a revenue of $1 million in three short years.

The company started to grow, and so did the number of employees – by 2010, Casalena had hired 30 employees. During the next ten years, the company received funding from various sources, was advertised in a number of popular events, and partnered with many influential companies.

Nowadays, Squarespace has over 1000 employees and has helped millions of individuals create their own websites.

Who’s Squarespace best suited for?

Squarespace markets itself as a platform that can be used by anyone. They’ve even risked running a Super Bowl in the past, which we all know isn’t the cheapest marketing option. And they have a really good reason to take such risks. Squarespace really does look impressive in terms of the features and the ease of use it delivers.

I’d say that Squarespace is the perfect solution for you if what you desire is a beautiful ecommerce store that’s going to resonate with your customers. And, of course, if you want to build the whole thing yourself, from scratch.

Creating multilingual sites on Squarespace

Squarespace allows you to create a site in another language apart from English in order to reach a bigger audience. You will be able to create a set of pages all in a different language. Another option you can make use of is the option to create a homepage that will link to the site in another language format, so your visitors are able to visit the site in their preferred language.

If you want a more detailed guide as to how you can go about creating a site in another language, Squarespace has created a comprehensive guide that allows you to follow it step by step.

Managing products in your Squarespace store

Right after sign-up, Squarespace gives you access to a very clear store management dashboard:

From there, you can manage your inventory, process orders, set discounts, and manage payments. You also get access to a panel that lets you edit your pages, change the design, view the metrics, and adjust any other setting on the site (you can see everything in the screenshot above).

The interface is very intuitive and doesn’t have much of a learning curve to it. For instance, to add a product, you just click the “Add Product” button and then proceed to input all the details of your product.

Under the hood, Squarespace integrates with Stripe to let you collect and process online payments. There’s no official integration with PayPal but you can accept PayPal as a payment method. It still does work, but it’s a little less user-friendly if you want to use it.

Content management system (CMS) features

One of the many advantages of using Squarespace is the ability to edit your page easily. This process is enabled by its extremely user-friendly content management system (CMS). Users have the ability to publish their content without much technical knowledge, making this website builder perfect for beginners.

As we already mentioned, Squarespace is a hosted platform, so you will be granted access from any web browser you choose. From there, you can easily begin your editing process and tweak, add, or change any feature you want.

Recent developments

As a platform that continues to develop and improve, it’s no surprise that recently Squarespace has announced the integration of another tool – Squarespace Scheduling.

This tool allows you to keep track of all your appointments within the platform. On top of that, it also allows you to share those appointments with others and it allows your clients to make their own appointments as well.

Squarespace scheduling will help keep you organized by keeping all your appointments at one place, which will surely save you some precious time.

Perfect use case

Squarespace is a great website builder and hosting option for beginners and experts alike. It’s so user-friendly that even if you don’t know anything about creating a website or are unfamiliar with the online ecommerce space, you’ll be able to build and manage the ecommerce website of your dreams.

Also, if website design is your priority, you’ll find gorgeous and easy-to-set-up templates which you can preview and test out before committing (and change at any time).

And finally, if you want an all-in-one solution, Squarespace will not only build your website, but host it as well. You can also buy domains, get website protection, analytics, and 24/7 customer support.

Customer support

Squarespace offers its customers 24/7 customer support. During these hours, you can reach their support team in two different ways:

However, if you don’t want to wait for an email and you want your answer ASAP, or you want to talk in person with someone from their support team, you can also contact them via Live Chat, which is available only on desktop. Bear in mind that this is not a 24/7 service, and you can reach them only between 4am and 8pm Eastern Time, Monday to Friday.

Before opting for any of these contact options, we recommend that you visit their Contact Us page, log in (this is very important), and see whether your questions can be answered by reading one of their following guides:

  • Customer care
  • Partnering and sponsorships
  • PR and communications
  • HR inquiries
  • Security escalations
  • Technical issues

If you cannot find your answers or you simply want to send an email or start a live chat, you’ll see the corresponding buttons on the screen.

Squarespace does not offer phone support.

Squarespace Review conclusion

Is Squarespace the right tool to launch your online store with?

In order to help you make a decision, in this part of our Squarespace review, we elaborated on all the pros and cons of using Squarespace.

Major Squarespace Pros

  • Attractive template designs

The main selling point for many ecommerce entrepreneurs who choose Squarespace is style and aesthetic. The templates available are undoubtedly more attractive than the templates on other free website builders, and this quickly translates into a more credible-looking and aesthetically-pleasing store.

  • An all-in-one approach

As you have seen already, Squarespace allows for all kinds of integrations, so you won’t have to add any supplementary plugins or applications. This will make your overall experience with Squarespace that much smoother and easier.

  • Solid data and marketing tools

At the same time, it’s about so much more than just the graphics. The data tracking, reporting, and marketing tools available as standard make it easy to drill down into your data, and target your prospects better. This makes it easier to tweak your promotions and marketing efforts from within the Squarespace admin panel.

  • Affordability

With costs hovering around the $26 mark per month, Squarespace is definitely on par with solutions like Shopify and other paid-for ecommerce website builders.

  • No transaction fees

No fees means protected margins, so you can walk away from the sale with more money.

Major Squarespace Cons

  • No phone support

As we already mentioned, if you run into difficulties with your Squarespace site, or if you are having problems with some of the functions, you will find no numbers you can call for an instant response.

  • Only Paypal and Stripe can be used

Squarespace allows you to use only Paypal and Stripe as a payment gateway, which may be a problem for certain customers.

  • Overwhelming styling options

For some new developers, the styling options can be a bit too in-depth. Sometimes having fewer options is a good thing, and with a strong template design, many of the styling preferences that can be chosen are just a step too far.

  • Not that many advanced marketing tools

Squarespace users note that the platform doesn’t allow for many advanced marketing tools. You can use some essential tools that allow you to market your website to a larger audience, but, generally speaking, this part needs improvement.

How many products can I sell on Squarespace?

Fortunately, there is no limit to how many products you can sell on your site. However, when it comes to how many products are showcased on a Product Page, the limit is 200 products.

What kind of products can I sell?

Squarespace allows you to sell many kinds of different products. That being said, you may run into some trouble when it comes to the payment processors you use since they sometimes don’t allow certain products to be sold. For more detailed information about what kind of businesses are accepted, check out Squarespace’s official guidelines regarding what can be sold on their website.

At what point will the customer be charged?

Your customers will be charged as soon as they check out.

What about the products that are sold out?

If a certain product is sold out, your customer will find a ‘sold out’ flag on the product display page. This means that they won’t be allowed to add that product in their cart, so they will have to wait until the product is back in stock.

Can I offer gift cards?

Yes, you do have the option to use gift cards for your business. Customers will have the option of purchasing gift cards for their friends and family.

How to delete my Squarespace account?

You have the option of deleting your Squarespace site only after cancelling your subscription to Squarespace. After you delete your page, visitors won’t be able to view its content.

You can delete your site by clicking on the Home Menu → Settings →Billing & Account → Delete Site.
